To study the effects of different oxygen free radical inhibitors on ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury in isolated rat lungs. Ninety Wistar rats were randomized into four groups: control (n = 30), I-R (n = 30), I-R with superoxide dismutase (SOD, n = 30), and I-R with catalase (CAT, n = 30). I-R was produced by inflation of the lungs with a one-way valve for 4 h at 37 degrees C. The following parameters were measured: pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) volume, nitrite, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) contents of the lung tissue. Compared with the control group, PVR, BALF volume, nitrite, and 8-OHdG content of the lung tissue were increased in I-R and SOD groups (P 0.05). I-R injury in isolated rat lungs can be attenuated by CAT. CAT is superior to SOD in ameliorating lung injury in I-R injury.Search form
